Glaciers and Glass

We have worked on some great public art projects that we have designed. This winter we were lucky to work with another artist, Tiffany Shaw fabricating glass components for a public art project that she designed. The sculpture is based on plaster casts taken directly from the Athabasca glacier, these molds are transformed in glass castings that show the form and texture of the glacier. The results have been stunning and the detail that was captured was incredible. It makes sense that glass would be the perfect material to capture the beauty of the glacier ice. These glass castings will be installed on Bear street in Banff this spring. The process we used was called sand casting which involved pressing the plaster molds into a bed of sand and then molten glass was poured into this impression. It is an amazing technique that allows for high levels of detail to be captured and endless possibilities.
