Glass Half Full

This summer Julia was asked to give an artist talk to the International Womens Forum. The topic was about being an artist during the pandemic. As she spoke about the challenges, she became aware of her gratitude, that admidst all the uncertainty , she could go to the studio, focus on work and the joy of working with a beautiful material like glass. It is a difficult material to work with but it offered solace. One interesting project that we worked on was a custom chandelier . Part of the challenge was the scale of the chandelier - it needed to fill a large vaulted ceiling filled with light and windows. We brainstormed to come up something completely original and fortunately the clients had a structural engineering background and was handy with design programs! The piece is comprised of solid glass cones reminiscent of rock and ice formations. The final piece is very gratifying because of the way it plays with the light in the space and each party involved brought their own ideas and expertise. As well we all had a chance to focus on beauty in a time of chaos.
